Silver Bibliography & Academic Reference Library

A free, open bibliography of 60 academic, museum and trade-society sources for the study of silver — from Hellenistic plate to contemporary studio jewelry. Filterable by era, region, type and topic. Each entry has a verified ISBN, OCLC, DOI, ProQuest or Persée identifier. A built-in citation generator outputs APA, MLA and Chicago format ready to paste into any LibGuide, syllabus or research paper.

Why this exists. Silver-related research is scattered across museum catalogs, trade-society journals, archaeology monographs and a small canon of bench-reference books. This page consolidates 60 entries that consistently appear in decorative-arts, archaeology, conservation and metalsmithing LibGuides. Each entry's identifier (ISBN, OCLC, DOI, ProQuest, Persée or ISSN) is included so you can verify or import the record into Zotero, EndNote or your library catalog.

How to use this page

  1. Use the dropdowns to narrow by era, region, or type; or type a keyword (e.g. hallmarks, Roman, conservation) into the topic search.
  2. Click Cite ↗ on any row to open the citation generator. APA (7th), MLA (9th) and Chicago (Author–Date, 17th) are produced from the same source data; copy them with a single click.
  3. Click any identifier to open the source on WorldCat, Persée, ProQuest or the publisher's catalog page in a new tab.

Scope and inclusion criteria

Entries are selected against three criteria: (a) the work is cited at least once in a major public-university LibGuide for decorative arts, archaeology, or metalsmithing; (b) the work has a stable verifiable identifier; and (c) the work is either foundational (foundation-of-field bench books, hallmark dictionaries) or open-access (Persée, museum-press freely-available, or library-cataloged dissertations). We deliberately exclude blog posts, vendor pamphlets, and any work whose source we could not verify on 30 April 2026.

About the citation generator

The citation generator builds APA / MLA / Chicago strings from the same structured fields shown in the table — author list, year, title, subtitle, publisher and place. It follows the most-recent edition of each style:

  • APA 7th edition — Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020); see APA Style sample references at apastyle.apa.org.
  • MLA 9th edition — MLA Handbook (Modern Language Association, 2021); see Purdue OWL summary at owl.purdue.edu.
  • Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition — Author–Date system; see official quick guide at chicagomanualofstyle.org.

The generator handles the common cases (1, 2, or 3+ authors; missing year; book vs. journal vs. catalog). It does not attempt edge cases like multi-volume works with multiple editors or conference-proceedings chapters — for those, treat the auto-output as a starting point and reconcile against the appropriate style manual. Auto-generation is offered as a productivity aid, not as a replacement for editorial review.
